There are approximately 4,000 different types of cockroaches in the world, 70 of which are found in the United States. Roaches are known to spread over 33 types of bacteria and carry allergens that can trigger allergic reactions and exacerbate asthma symptoms in children. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health, one in five children in the U.S. have severe sensitivities to cockroach allergens. Roaches pick up germs on the spines of their legs as they crawl, which may be transferred to humans through food contamination. This can lead to illnesses such as E. coli and Salmonella. If you suspect that you have a cockroach infestation, the best course of action is to contact a pest control professional to identify the species and implement a treatment plan.

Our pest index can help you determine which type of cockroach is invading your home.
